Hi, I just came across your blog and I am beginning to do the same thing and pretty green as to knowledge. I picked up an old 1971 VW bus that is pretty clean that has no engine but the transmission is still there. What sort of electric engine did you use and it seems like you have a lot of batteries which are pretty expensive. I only intend on using this once it's finished to go to the local store for groceries and supplies - maybe 5-10 miles a day. Can I get by with 4 batteries instead or do you need that many batteries to move the Van? I am excited to get started but need some help and direction.
The total cost was about 10,000 including the bus, but obver time I've put in 5000 more due to mistakes I made. Not a cost effective ting, but I enjoyed it
My engine that I have now is a custom one, but similar to many commercial ones that are big enough for the bus frame. You just simply need that many batteries to make it move. Lithium is way way more expensive. $2000 in my beatteries is still $20000 in lithium. Although the price probably is falling.

this is a lot like mine. i'm converting a '74, and i coupled the motor to the tranny pretty much the exact same way. other pix?
